Avalanche prevention and control.
How do people prepare or prevent an avalanche?
People can not halt an avalanche so much but can make it smaller so it can't cause quite as much damage as a regular avalanche can. These smaller slides can be deliberately caused by using explosives or artillery fire. Skiers can also trigger smaller ones on purpose. People can prepare by building obstacles such as posts, nets, fences, windbreaks and anchors to slow the avalanche down or make a physical obstacle to divert the avalanche. Signs may also be used (like above) to warn people of the danger of avalanches. Governments also tell skiers and other people what to watch out for and what to do in case of being caught in an avalanche.

Avalanche Rescue
Avalanche Rescue Teams.
Rescue teams around the world are an example of what people have used to try to manage avalanche victims after the disaster has happened. The video below shows CARDA (Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association) a Canadian rescue avalanche dog team working to help victims of avalanches. The first person they saved was a skier who was saved by dog handler Robin Sigers and his dog Keno. They found the skier in December 2000.The skier was the first life to be saved by CARDA. Dogs are used for their sensitive nose and agility in finding people who are buried under avalanches. |
Avalanche Survival Equipment.
People have invented survival equipment for avalanches this is another strategy used to manage the after effects of avalanches. Such things can include Rescue beacon Avalanche probes Avalung Airbag Avalung
The avalung is an invention that allows you to breathe under an avalanche easier also survive for long enough for a rescue team to come and find you (provided you're not already dead.) Avalanche Airbag
If you are caught in an avalanche it is good to have one of these on. These airbags force you to stay at the top of an avalanche making it easy for you to be rescued (provided you have enough time to pull the trigger.) |
